The Aspen Institute Kyiv Nominated Liana Khorovytska, Executive Director of CORE Ukraine, to Participate in the “Philosophy and Practice” Seminar in Germany
For 15 years, the Aspen Institute Germany has been hosting the “Philosophy and Practice” seminar. The event brings together international leaders for dialogue on values-based leadership, moral dilemmas, and strategic and day-to-day decision-making in times of change. Ukrainian leaders have traditionally participated in this seminar, and this year the Aspen Institute Kyiv nominated Liana Khorovytska, Executive Director of CORE Ukraine.
In this international environment of leaders, a wide range of challenges, approaches, and solutions are discussed — and each new perspective sheds light on something previously unseen. Thanks to this, Liana shares her vision of leadership evolved:
“This seminar gave me the opportunity to rethink what it means to be a leader today. Not a manager, not a coordinator — but a true leader: someone who sets the direction, creates an atmosphere, and upholds the values that unite the team.”
Equally important is representing Ukraine on the international stage. Liana emphasized that it was not only valuable to learn from others, but also to convey the foundation upon which leadership is built in times of profound societal transformation:
“In the context of the war for a free Ukraine, as we rebuild after destruction, it’s vital to remember: leadership is not about control — it’s about service, about responsibility for the future, and for the trust of the people.”
Liana concludes: it is precisely such conversations — deep, honest, interdisciplinary, and transnational — that help build bridges where they are needed most.
Carol Gluck, Professor and PhD at Columbia University, and Ruth Girardet, Non-executive Director at the University of Edinburgh, moderated the seminar.
