The Aspen Institute Kyiv Hosted a Meeting of “Justice, Law, and Society” Seminar Alumni with Supreme Court President Stanislav Kravchenko

The Aspen Institute Kyiv believes that open dialogue among leaders from various sectors is essential to building a just and democratic society. One of its key priorities is strengthening the rule of law and increasing public trust in the judiciary.

On June 26, the Institute, in partnership with the OSCE Support Programme for Ukraine, held a dialogue titled “Constitutional Justice: A View from the Bench” with Stanislav Kravchenko, President of the Supreme Court. The meeting brought together alumni of the “Justice, Law, and Society” seminars.

During his conversation with the legal community, Stanislav Kravchenko outlined the main challenges currently facing the judiciary in wartime conditions. He also highlighted the factors influencing public trust in the courts. He spoke about the established institutional dialogue between the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, and shared his reflections on rethinking constitutional values in today’s context.

Participants also discussed the issue of remote court proceedings and the potential need for a military justice system. In addition, they explored the prospects for the development of the judiciary and key factors shaping public confidence in the courts.

Iryna Hazdayka-Vasylyshyn, Head of the Department of Criminal Law and Criminology at the Lviv State University of Internal Affairs, moderated the dialogue.

Olena Fomina, Policy Program Director at the Aspen Institute Kyiv, coordinated the event.

The Aspen Institute Kyiv will continue bringing legal professionals together to discuss issues affecting the judiciary. Such meetings help facilitate the search for common solutions to the legal community’s challenges.

We are grateful to our partners from the OSCE Support Programme for Ukraine for their longstanding cooperation within the “Justice, Law, and Society” program area.
