Yuliya Tychkivska: Ukraine is a key element of Europe’s security on the way to EU membership

The Aspen Institute Kyiv actively cooperates with partners of the international Aspen Institute network to maintain a leadership dialogue to support Ukraine. Notably, over the 2.5 years of full-scale war, we have strengthened our relations with our Italian colleagues. Starting with the meetings between Italian and Ukrainian leaders when our alumni were connecting from shelters and trenches. Now, we also have the opportunity to convey to the Italian audience the importance of our partnership with Ukraine.
The Aspen Institute Italy held an online panel discussion, “New Europe and the challenges of enlargement.” Yuliya Tychkivska, the Aspen Institute Kyiv Executive Director, participated in the event.
Ukraine’s accession to the European Union is not only a matter of economic or political integration. It is essential for the strategic security of the EU and its member states, which already face the consequences of revived Russian militarism. Ukraine’s geographical location, military experience, and logistical capabilities are key players in strengthening the EU’s security posture, especially against Russian aggression. Ukraine’s membership directly contributes to the EU’s strategic security interests.
Yuliya Tychkivska, Executive Director of The Aspen Institute Kyiv, presented a vision of Ukraine’s future in the context of its membership in the European Union during her speech at the panel discussion “New Europe and the challenges of enlargement.” The Aspen Institute Italy organized the event.
Military expertise
Yuliya Tychkivska emphasized that Ukraine has gained unprecedented military experience in countering Russian aggression. This makes it an essential partner for Europe in strengthening collective security. In addition to NATO’s role, Ukraine is actively reforming its defense system by EU and NATO standards, which will deepen security cooperation.
Energy security in Europe
Ukraine is a strategic energy hub for Europe, with important energy supply routes passing through it. Integration into the EU will provide control over these routes and help reduce dependence on Russian gas by promoting the development of alternative energy sources.
Cybersecurity and Hybrid Warfare
Yuliya Tychkivska also pointed out that Ukraine has extensive experience combating Russian cyberattacks and disinformation, which could help strengthen the EU’s cyber defense.
The Black Sea region and common security
Ukraine plays a key role in ensuring the security of the Black Sea region. Its membership in the EU will help strengthen control over this strategic region, mainly to protect trade routes and energy supplies.
“We need to recognize that Ukraine’s membership in the EU contributes to the future stability and security of the European Union,” summarized Yuliya Tychkivska.
We need to speak with one voice in the international arena. Every day, we have to work side by side and sound even louder. Our unity, consolidation, strengthening of trust in each other, ability to innovate, and ability to calculate our strength over the long haul are more critical than ever.
