The Aspen Institute Kyiv presents a report based on the events of the “Human, Family and Society” program.

Global trends and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have triggered profound socio-economic, demographic, and psychological changes with far-reaching consequences for Ukrainian citizens and their families. Ukrainian society and the state must minimize the war’s negative impact on families, adapt family policy to the new circumstances, ensure psychological support, and restore family relationships. To achieve this, creating a platform for discussing these issues among professionals is essential.
Thus, the seminars organized within the framework of the “Human, Family and Society” Program aim to discuss key trends, challenges, and prospects for the development of family relationships in Ukraine. The outcomes of these discussions are intended to support the development of effective strategies and policy recommendations that address the current needs of modern Ukrainian families.
The dialogue discussions involved the following categories of participants: representatives of state authorities responsible for the development and implementation of family policy; regional representatives; experts in sociology, psychology, and social work specializing in family issues; leaders of civil society organizations working with families and children; representatives of academia and research institutions; media representatives, influencers, and opinion leaders; members of business and educational communities, legal professionals; religious leaders; and representatives of international organizations.
The group of participants was formed with consideration of gender balance, regional representation, professional background, and the principle of including various stakeholders.
The results presented in this report summarize three three-day seminars that addressed the following topics: the evolution of the concept of family in societal and individual relationships within Western, Eastern, and Ukrainian traditions; the role of the family in modern Ukrainian society; contemporary challenges to family relationships (war, demographic shifts, migration, economic instability, changing gender roles); possible ways to adapt family policy to these challenges; integration of international experience into Ukraine’s family policy; government support for families and family policy; and prospects for the development of family policy in Ukraine.
