Going beyond stereotypes is necessary for developing each other, society, and the country: Ideas Day in Dnipro

Going beyond stereotypes is necessary to develop each other, society, and the country.

On July 20, the second Ideas Day was held in Dnipro. The Aspen Institute Kyiv and Impact Hub Odesa and its co-founder, Yegor Grebennikov, organized the event.

The speakers of the first-panel discussion discussed strategic security issues. In particular, the main changes that are needed to ensure stability and security in Ukraine effectively, both now and in the long term.

Oleksandr Kamyshin, Minister for Strategic Industries of Ukraine:

Defense should become a priority sector of the economy. Defense is the new agriculture. It was a challenge to start a business in the agricultural industry about ten years ago. You need to understand the segment, what was critical, what was missing, what specialists were needed for development, and what innovations could be applied. Before the full-scale invasion, only the state was in charge of defense, but now, more and more private entrepreneurs are entering this market. That is, the defense industry needs to be approached systematically.

Pavlo Kazarin, journalist, publicist:

There is a plasticity of expectations in society. For example, back in March 2022, an optimistic scenario for the war’s end was reaching the borders on February 23, 2022. Now, the country is talking only about achieving the 1991 borders. We are also talking about shifts in the imagination of Ukrainian and Western players when Ukrainian society, despite the skepticism of the whole world, has shown its resilience and the limits of the possible and impossible. We must continue to work with the imagination of reality.

Lana Zerkal, Project Manager for Critical Infrastructure Damage Assessment and Recovery Preparedness at UNDP:

Ukraine has become a platform for studying the war. No one in Europe expected that there could be such attacks on the energy system as our country experienced. Now, we have become an example of energy system development. We have lost almost half of our generation’s capacity but have replaced our old methods with more efficient ones. We must understand that no energy development would exist without a market system.

Denis Poltavets, Director of Program Development at the Aspen Institute Kyiv, and Yevhen Hlibovytskyi, a pro.mova company partner, moderated the discussion.

We thank everyone who joined the event!
