Aspen Institute Kyiv Alumni Explore the Evolution of Dignity at a Community Seminar

On 18–19 July, Aspen Institute Kyiv brought together alumni of its various seminars and programmes for a community seminar titled What Does It Mean to Be Dignified Today? The Evolution of Dignity as the Foundation of Freedom.

Together with moderator Andriy Kulakov, Programme Coordinator for the Community Programme, participants explored how the understanding of dignity has evolved from antiquity to the present day. Texts by Dante, Aristotle, Cicero, Pico della Mirandola, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Hannah Arendt, Viktor Frankl, Ihor Kozlovskyi and other thinkers became a starting point for conversations about choice, freedom, responsibility and human resilience at a time when these questions have taken on renewed significance.

The discussion continued with a screening of A Man for All Seasons (1966). The story of Thomas More once again brought participants back to a timeless question: what enables a person to remain true to their convictions when the cost of doing so is extraordinarily high?

Beyond the seminar room, conversations continued during a paddleboarding, kayaking and boating trip on the Kozynka River, followed by a shared dinner prepared together with Yevhen Klopotenko. These moments proved just as meaningful as the texts and discussions themselves, offering participants an opportunity to get to know one another better, continue conversations that had begun during the seminar and strengthen the bonds within the community.
