Aspen Institute Kyiv honored Oleksiy Makieiev, the Ambassador of Ukraine to Germany, for his contribution to the development of the culture of dialogue

Aspen Institute Kyiv hands out honors to members of the community who have shown an example of value-oriented leadership during the year at the annual Aspen Reunion alumni meeting. Choosing nominees in 2022 proved to be the most difficult because most of the graduates and members of the Community, who are the most active among them, joined Ukraine’s struggle for freedom.

Oleksiy Makieiev, “Responsible Leadership” – 20 seminar alumni, received the award for contributing to the development of dialogue culture. Since September 23, Oleksiy Makieiev has been Ukraine’s Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to Germany. Previously, he worked as a Special Representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine on sanctions policy.

In the conditions of a full-scale Russian invasion, dialogue with international partners plays a huge role. Such a dialogue has a practical dimension — the protection of borders and the liberation of temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories, the preservation of Ukrainian lives and the continuation of the functioning of infrastructure facilities.

Oleksiy Makieiev heads one of the most complex and strategically critical diplomatic directions. Germany is the largest supplier of arms and humanitarian aid to our country in Europe. Recently, Germany supplied Ukraine with the Iris-T system and 30 Gepard anti-aircraft guns. Delivery of three more Iris-T systems and 7 Leopards is planned.

Also, Oleksiy Makeiev said that during direct negotiations, Germany assured it would transfer more weapons and ammunition.
