Oksana Hoshva, the “Responsible Leadership” — 18 Seminar alumni, participated in Bloomberg CityLab 2023

On October 18-20, 2023, Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Aspen Institute (USA) held the “Bloomberg CityLab 2023″ conference in Washington, DC.
The event brought together mayors worldwide with leading experts in innovation and urbanism, business leaders, artists, and public figures to discuss and find solutions to city development issues.
The Aspen Institute Kyiv nominated Oksana Hoshva, the “Responsible Leadership” — 18 Seminar alumni, to participate in this conference.
Oksana shared her thoughts on the topic of urban development and the conference in general:
- After the 2020 lockdown, city authorities still struggle to bring people back to the downtown areas. Vishaan Chakrabarti, founder and creative director of Vishaan Practice for Architecture and Urbanism, from New York, is convinced that to bring people back to cities, creating both workplaces and new experiences for residents is necessary. In this context, Mr. Chakrabarti presented the so-called “three J” concept: Jobs, Justice and Joy.
- City administrations need help attracting personnel to certain professions. The conference participants noted that changing the perception of manufacturing careers, for example, in the construction industry, is necessary. In particular, we need to work on the perception of these fields of activity as an opportunity to use innovative technologies. This should make manufacturing professions more attractive. For example, the Washington, D.C., mayor’s office cooperates with Harvard to provide internships for the best graduates.
- A special place during CityLab was occupied by “work in the fields.” In addition to panel discussions, participants had an opportunity to explore the city through walking, cycling, jogging, and excursions. All this allowed them to get to know the communities they were new to and their life activities.
We thank our colleagues for organizing the event, which enriched the participants with insights and new approaches to solving challenges related to urban development.
