Aspen Institute network international partners participated in the seminar “Challenges to Democracy” in Rome

A busy week filled with international strategic meetings and the promotion of Aspen’s Mission!

A seminar, “Challenges to Democracy,” for international partners of the Aspen Institute network, as well as a meeting of the International Committee were held in Rome.

The central topic of the seminar was the challenges of democracy facing communities and possible ways to address them. The discussion was held in the typical Aspen style based on texts by contemporary and ancient intellectuals. Texts by Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave,” Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar’s “Speech of Bharat Ratna,” Frida Kahlo’s “Letter to the President of Mexico, Miguel Alemán Valdés,” Zadie Smith’s “The Lazy River,” and W.H. Auden’s “Refugee Blues” were presented to participants.

Representatives from all Aspen Institutes and Aspen US Board of Trustees participated in the International Partners Meeting. In this meeting, Aspen Institute Kyiv executive director Yulia Tychkivska took part. The meeting had three panels – on the challenges of democracy, programs for youth, and the history of development and program activities of international partners of the Aspen Institutes. Also, new network initiatives were presented during the International Committee meeting, including the Aspen Initiative in Colombia.

“Our common mission unites us with our international partners in willingness to build a society of dignity and promote the culture of dialogue. Each Aspen Institute embodies unique programs but together we create a strong community that directs its activities for the common good,” says Yulia Tychkivska.

Since the start of the full-scale invasion, the Aspen Institute family has become a significant force and support for the Aspen Institute Kyiv, providing substantial financial contributions to developing the Institute’s activities. We are infinitely grateful to our partners for their generosity and support when it was so needed. We will remember this with great respect and gratitude.
