Aspen Institute Kyiv’s Seminar for the NGO Detector Media Team: “Media-versum and Horizons of Responsibility”

On September 22-24, the Aspen Institute Kyiv conducted a seminar titled “Media-versum and Horizons of Responsibility” for the NGO “Detector Media”’s Team.
During the seminar, participants discussed the place and importance of freedom of speech within the framework of liberal-democratic discourse. An integral part of the discussion focused on the inner logic of media and its influence on the work of journalists and other related spheres such as politics, culture, and business.
Journalism and the role of media are evolving in tandem with the transformations in contemporary democracy, which also formed a focal point for the participants’ discussions. The participants mainly delved into the societal mission of media and its changes as a sphere for public dialogue and a platform for seeking solutions.
A separate session during the discussion was dedicated to the social construction of reality and the responsibility of journalists and media professionals in this context. Participants also explored the impact of technology and media forms on an individual’s receptive constitution concerning Marshall McLuhan’s philosophy.
In small groups, participants developed strategies for ethical decision-making during the coverage of armed conflicts and wartime society, as well as addressing technological and disinformation challenges in the present and future.
Denis Poltavets, Director of Program Development, and Andriy Kulakov, Coordinator of the Aspen Institute Kyiv Community and Program Director of Internews Ukraine moderated the seminar.
Olena Fomina, the Aspen Institute’s Kyiv Policy Program Director, coordinated the organization of the seminar.
