The Aspen Institute Kyiv launches a new program — “Human, Family, and Society”

The full-scale war, demographic, social, and economic threats, and temporary forced displacement are leading to a significant transformation in the concept of family and family ties. For sustainable development, the country must adapt to new realities, address challenges, and build its future.

The Aspen Institute Kyiv, with the initiation by the Office of the President of Ukraine, the Ministry of Social Policy of Ukraine, the Coordination Center for the Development of Family Education and Child Care, and supported by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Ukraine, is launching the “Human, Family, and Society” Program. Its goal is to create a platform for discussing the concept of family, major trends, causes of transformation, challenges, and prospects for developing family relationships in Ukraine. During the seminars, participants will be able to discuss potential vectors of family policy through dialogue.

Within the program, the Institute will hold three three-day seminars, “Family: Concept, Principles, and Policy”, by the end of 2024.

We invite representatives of state bodies authorized to develop and implement family policy, local government bodies, public, charitable, and international organizations, businesses, media, and experts related to the event’s topic to participate.

Applications can be submitted via the link.

Seminar dates:

  • 2-4th of August
  • 11-13th of October (to be confirmed)
  • 6-8th of December (to be confirmed)

Location: Hotel complex in the Kyiv region.

Please choose your preferred date when filling out the application. The deadline to apply is the 30th of June, 2024.

The discussion will be based on the texts of classic and contemporary thinkers and researchers, serving as the foundation for dialogue. Together, participants representing different dimensions and perspectives of the concept of family and family policy will develop strategies and recommendations that consider global trends and the changed needs of modern Ukrainian families.

During the seminars, participants will address the following topics:

  • Evolution of the concept of family in global and Ukrainian society: current trends and challenges facing families in Ukraine.
  • The role of the family in modern Ukrainian society: social, economic, and cultural functions of the family in Ukraine.
  • Modern challenges for family relationships, including: war and martial law, demographic changes, migration, economic instability, changing gender roles and their impact on family life. Possible ways to adapt family policy to these challenges.
  • Prospects for the development of family policy in Ukraine: defining strategic directions for the development of family policy. Methods of involving and participating civil society, the state, and the private sector in forming and implementing this policy.

The list of participants will be formed considering gender balance, regional representation, and fields of activity based on the principle of representing different stakeholders.

The “Human, Family, and Society” Program is implemented by the Aspen Institute Kyiv on the initiative of the Office of the President of Ukraine, the Ministry of Social Policy of Ukraine, and the Coordination Center for the Development of Family Education and Child Care, and it is supported by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Ukraine.
