Enrollment for “Disinformation and the Role of Social Media Influencers in Times of Crises, Conflicts, and Wars” program by the Aspen Institute Germany

The more people consume news from social networks, the more relevant the issue of content verification becomes. Do you remember the case when several media outlets, due to a “leak” in one of the social networks, spread what turned out to be a fake news story about the “death” of King Charles III? Such situations undermine trust in the media and require practical countermeasures against misinformation.

The challenge becomes especially relevant during wartime when Russia uses disinformation as a weapon.

Last year, the Aspen Institute Germany launched the “Disinformation and the Role of Social Media Influencers in Times of Crises, Conflicts, and Wars” program. The program became a platform for opinion leaders and content creators to discuss how to combat disinformation on the Internet.

This year, the Aspen Institute Germany is opening the next round of applications for the program until July 15 via the link.

Last year, six representatives from Ukraine participated in the program. The participants shared that exchanging experiences with influencers from different countries broadened their understanding of mechanisms to counter disinformation and fact-checking, as well as the impact of social media on shaping public opinion.

The program invites influencers and content creators to discuss how to fight disinformation online. Participants will collaborate on guidelines for a “Code of Ethics for Social Media Influencers and Content Creators”, which will be shared with policymakers, platforms, and organizations, promoting informed communication online.

We invite influencers who meet the following criteria to apply:

  •  At least 10,000 followers on social media;
  •  High level proficiency in English;
  •  Have an audience in Central and Eastern Europe, Germany, or the Baltic countries;
  •   Interested in international exchange on the project topic.

Participation in the project involves attending live events in Berlin and Warsaw. The Aspen Institute Germany will cover travel, meals, and accommodation costs during the study tours.

The Aspen Institute Germany initiated the project with the support of the Aspen Institute Kyiv and the Aspen Institute Central Europe.
