Oleh Derevianko Participates in Aspen Institute Germany’s Leadership Seminar “Philosophy and Practice”

Sixteen participants, eleven countries, and four days of dialogue on values, freedom, and responsibility—this was the Leadership Seminar “Philosophy and Practice,” Aspen Institute Germany’s flagship seminar, held on 11–14 June.

This year, Oleh Derevianko—an entrepreneur and artist—took part in the seminar as Aspen Institute Kyiv’s nominee.

The seminar brought together leaders from business, politics, civil society, and the cultural sector. Over four days, participants discussed classical and contemporary texts, reflecting on the nature of the individual and society, values, moral choice, and leadership in times of crisis.

“My first classic Aspen seminar took place almost two decades ago—in October 2008 in Crimea. It was the second Responsible Leadership seminar, and since then Aspen seminars in different formats, locations, and countries have become an important part of my life and a unique space for meeting, conversation, and collaboration,” Oleh Derevianko shared.

According to Oleh, the seminar exceeded his expectations. Although the programme was shorter than the classic seminar format, the smaller group created space for particularly rich discussions, while the diversity of participants’ experiences and the atmosphere of trust enabled deep intellectual and personal exchange. He also highlighted the work of moderators Carol Gluck and Ruth Girardet, whose thoughtful facilitation encouraged every participant to contribute and supported a shared exploration of the seminar texts.

Among the highlights of the seminar, Oleh particularly recalled the discussion of Zadie Smith’s short story Lazy River and the group’s performance of Sophocles’ Antigone, which came together remarkably well despite having only a few hours to prepare.

“As always, the organisation and the seminar venue were exceptional. Everything took place in an atmosphere of openness and humanity, and I hope that some of the people I would probably never have met without this seminar will remain not only cherished memories but lifelong friends.
