Yuliya Tychkivska on the Resnick Aspen Action Forum: “Russia-Ukraine war requires bold, joined actions of partners ”

On July 27 — 30 Resnick Aspen Action Forum took place. Yuliya Tychkivska, Aspen Institute Kyiv executive director, was the speaker of the “Emerging into what?” panel discussion. Yuliya explained why the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine is an existential threat for the entire western world and democratic values. Furthermore, she stated how the emergence in a global context could be seen from the Ukrainian perspective.

The main issue of the “Emerging into what?” panel discussion on the Resnick Aspen Action Forum were the global disruptions that have created a collective inflection point; the foundations on which our societies, economies and livelihoods have been called into question. One of such global disruptions is Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. It is a threat that goes far beyond Ukraine.

Russia has become a global gangster who terrifies millions of ordinary, innocent people

Yuliya Tychkivska, Aspen Institute Kyiv executive director, underlined that Russia has become a global gangster who terrifies millions of ordinary innocent people, corrupting or threatening many decision makers all over the world and playing a double standards game to destroy the current globe order.

Russia is investing in the distribution of propaganda and fake news on a global scale, using energy sources as a threat to the entirety of Europe thus provoking a global energy crisis. Russia conducts large-scale and open espionage on the territories of sovereign states in Europe and far beyond Europe, interfering in election processes in various countries including the United States. They also occupy parts of sovereign states such as Georgia and Moldova without being held accountable. Russia continues terrorizing citizens of Syria and many African countries, supporting local dictatorships and following its ambitions to become a global power.

Russia-Ukraine war requires bold, joined actions of partners

Yuliya is sure that if Ukraine fails, the whole global security architecture will fail and western democracies will collapse. She stressed the importance of understanding that the Russia-Ukraine war requires bold, joined actions of partners:

— I want to see a world where defending democracy, freedom and human lives and rights is higher up on the agenda of governments. I want to see a world where governments, media, NGOs and businesses join forces to help ordinary people to understand why this is a critical situation. Moreover, I wish for people to understand how it helps the US and Europe if Ukraine prevails and Russia pays the price for provoking an illegal war. Thirdly, my desire is to see a world where businesses don’t operate in places such as Russia or China where fundamental values of freedom and dignity are ignored and brutally violated.

Yuliya added that globalization without values and principles leads to war. In such cases, autocrats blackmail their trade partners and put millions of people on the edge of starvation, conduct cyber wars against governments and businesses etc.

— For many years my team and I have been working to build a good society where dialogue is an effective tool to find solutions which in turn will be converted into actions and bring positive results. We hope to see all of us united in action in this existential fight for values of freedom and dignity, helping good to prevail.
