Where is the line between freedom of speech and the safety of journalists in wartime conditions?: Aspen Institute Kyiv held an event for representatives of the media community

Courage, fortitude, objectivity – these words used by the world to describe the work of Ukrainian journalists during the war. At the same time, due to security reasons, journalistic activity in Ukraine currently has several restrictions. The issue of developing effective mechanisms for this activity in wartime conditions remains open. Representatives of the media community sought answers to it in a dialogue.

A closed discussion about the work of a journalist during wartime took place at the Media Center of Ukraine. The participants of the event discussed:

  • legislative regulation of journalistic activities under martial law conditions;
  • current restrictions on the efficiency of submission of materials by journalists;
  • implementation of freedom of speech and access to information under martial law.

The event was moderated by Andriy Shevchenko, head of the Ukraine Media Center, and Andriy Kulakov, program director of Internews-Ukraine, and program coordinator of Aspen Institute Kyiv.

The discussion materials, together with the results of the media community survey and interviews with representatives of state authorities, will be included in the recommendations of the government, parliament, and the journalistic community.

We thank the Ukraine Media Center for the platform for the dialogue.

The event was held by Aspen Institute Kyiv together with the OSCE Project Coordinator in Ukraine with the expert support of Internews-Ukraine.
